Alcoa has issued a warning about increasing spending at U.S. smelters
October 23, 2025
Alcoa said that after signing a 10-year New hydropower supply contract with the New York Power Authority, the company will invest approximately 60 million US dollars to modernize some of its aluminium smelters in Massena, New York State.
But Chief Executive Officer Wiliam Oplinger said that the 50% tariff imposed by the United States on imported aluminum did not attract him to spend money to restart the idle capacity at Alcoa's Warwick smelter in Indiana.
He told analysts, "This could cost about 100 million US dollars and take up to two years."
He also said, "Tariffs will change over time, so we won't just waste 100 million dollars on this tariff alone."
