New Zealand's Minister of Commerce: No safeguard measures will be imposed on aluminium profiles imports
October 13, 2026
In an email statement, New Zealand's Minister of Commerce, Cameron Brewer, said that New Zealand has decided not to impose safeguard measures on aluminium profile imports. After the local industry claimed that imported products caused damage, officials from the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) conducted an investigation. The conclusion was that, considering the overall public interest, safeguard measures should not be implemented. Brewer adopted this suggestion. He stated that the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment found that the industry was indeed facing difficulties, and imports exacerbated the related pressure. "However, the investigation also found that imports were only one of the many causes of the industry's difficulties. Factors such as the sluggish construction activities and rising production costs also had a significant impact." The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment report pointed out that implementing safeguard measures might increase the costs of downstream manufacturing enterprises, end-users and consumers, and was not conducive to New Zealand's relations and trade goals. Brewer said that the industry could still apply for anti-dumping or anti-subsidy tax investigations to verify whether imported products had unfair pricing or received subsidies. He stated that if the industry intended to take this path, the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment was willing to engage in constructive collaboration with it.
