According to international media reports, the Federation of Indian Mineral Industries (FIMI) has submitted a petition urging the government to abolish the export duty on low-grade bauxite, restrict imports of finished aluminum products, and implement preferential railway freight rates for commodities such as coking coal, iron ore, and steel.
FIMI added that there is strong demand in international markets—particularly in Western India—for low-grade bauxite, and removing the current 15% export duty would help boost exports. The federation also urged raising the import duty on aluminum from 7.5% to 15% and called for the restoration of freight concessions for short-haul cargo transportation.
It is reported that India’s bauxite exports stood at 8.91 million tonnes in fiscal year 2015–16 but plummeted to just 359,000 tonnes in fiscal year 2024–25.
